Deepening Character Motivation

Place: Sewickley Public Library

10:00am – 12pm

Characters’ motivations create the soul of a story. The same story can become deeper and more layered by altering the motivations. Motivation works with conflict and goals to build a storyline, but it is motivation that makes the goals worthwhile and the conflict significant enough to sustain a novel. This workshop will discuss how rethinking motivation can improve a story and its characters, how it can braid with conflict  to add nuance and meaning, and how it can transform a story from ordinary to “big book.”

Madeline Hunter has had 30 historical romances published. With millions of books in print,  her novels are regulars on bestseller lists like USAToday, the New York Times and Publishers Weekly and have been translated into 14 languages. She has won two RITAs and been a finalist seven times. She has given workshops, keynote speeches and all day retreats at chapters all over the country, and gave a keynote address at a national conference of RWA. This workshop was previously given to standing-room only audiences at RWA’s and RT’s national conferences.
