It’s Not Boilerplate, It’s the Plot to Your Career

A presentation by our own attorney-in-residence, Erin O’Brien

Okay, we’re all wordsmiths and readers, but when it comes to contracts….Well, they’re not exactly romance novels, are they?  But they are important little devils, and can lead many an unsuspecting author astray.  This class will explore basic contract concepts and provide a high-level overview of an author’s rights in her work.  We’ll discuss compensation/consideration, indemnification, and termination, among other legal terms.
Of course, since this presentation is being offered by a lawyer, we can’t escape one disclaimer:
This class shall not constitute legal advice, nor shall it create an attorney-client relationship.
Erin O’Brien w/a Laurel Kerr is a romance writer who sometimes goes to the dark side and practices law.  Her debut novel, Wild On My Mind, will be released in print and ebooks October of this year.  Wild On My Mind (under the name “Volunteering Her Heart”) reached the 2016 Golden Heart Finals.  Laurel also finaled in the Golden Hearts in 2017 with her manuscript, “Lord Lion and the Lady Publisher.”  She was formerly senior counsel at Wabtec and an associate at Eckert Seamans.  Laurel graduated first in her class from Washington & Lee School of Law.

Government Agencies

Heidi Bishop

Ever wanted to know how our government agencies really work? Who are the men and women who oversee U. S. government functions, such as law and justice, defense and diplomacy, and our interior matters? Plotting a hot CIA agent falling in love with a straight shooting FBI agent? Do these people even talk to each other? Is government intelligence an oxymoron? Find the answers to these and other federal questions at our Government Agencies program. Questions in advance are appreciated and can be sent through the TRRW Yahoo Group or in the comments.

Author and Special Guest, Colleen Myers

Place: Sewickley Public Library

10:00am – 12pm

Medicine and Manuscripts, Oh My

Medical situations can make fiction more dramatic and can hook readers – just ask fans of General Hospital, the longest-running soap opera in American history! By using accurate medical details, characters, and scenarios, you can improve the believability of your book and rivet readers.

Review background information about typical medical training and discuss urban versus rural practices – helpful when writing about small town romance settings!

You will also learn about:

Using proper terminology

What the different levels of training are

Rural vs. urban – small town romance, realities of medical care

Quirks of medicine/how to dress your characters

How TV/movies get it wrong/HIPPA fails

Additional resources

There will also be a Q&A, so be sure to bring all your medical ailments to get a free consultation from Dr. Colleen (don’t do that).

Bonus session: Use your stethoscope as a nunchuck. (just kidding) (not really)

Colleen plays many roles. Not only is she a veteran, a mother, and a practicing physician, but she is a writer of science fiction and contemporary romances. Colleen’s dreams include surviving her son’s teenage years, exploring every continent on this planet, except Antartica, cause that’s way too cold, and winning the Nobel peace prize. Dream BIG! Currently, she is working on Distant Memory, the third in her SciFi Romance series. In the meantime, look for her at https://www.colleensmyers.com

Special Guest, Author Assistant Amy Hrutkay

Place: Sewickley Public Library

A Behind the Scenes Look at an Author PA

After Fifty Shades of Gray was released, Amy re-learned the joy of reading. In 2014 she met Susan Stoker in a Facebook party and won a copy of her first book. Ever since that point they have been close friends and Amy travels to events to assist Susan whenever possible. Recently, when Amazon’s Kindle Worlds program folded, Susan made the decision to start her own company to keep the fan-fiction books alive and asked Amy to run the back-end operations of the LLC.

Amy Hrutkay received a BA from the University of North Carolina/Charlotte. She’s worked as a paralegal as well as a contract specialist for a government contractor. After she earned her AA in accounting, she began focusing on the financial aspects of government contracting. She’s been working with numbers for seventeen years and currently works for Progeny Systems  as a financial analyst.
