Workshop: How to Paint Your World with Words
Instructor: Melinda Williams
Workshop Length: 4 weeks, October 1-31
Cost: $15 TRRW members; $25 RWA members; $35 non-RWA or TRRW members

Workshop Description:
We are going to explore how descriptive writing can transform your work. To write with descriptive words and make the reader’s world picture perfect. To create a world where our reader can see or ‘picture’ the world we create where our setting and characters are believable.

First Week: Discussion about what is description writing and how it will expand your world of writing. How to obtain the eye of the world round you and to reveal how to use it in your writing. Begin on the five senses and how they help paint your words.

Second Week: We will look at sensory detail in more depth. What we see, hear, taste, touch, and feel. How to use this to make our writing pop. We will also examine use of metaphors and similes in writing and the way action verbs keep our stories exciting and moving.

Third Week: Discuss how description can bring our characters and setting to life, which leads to a more exciting page-turner. In addition, how point of view can assist in writing your descriptive piece.

Fourth Week: Close the workshop with how writing description helps with pace and makes a world of vivid storytelling that will keep your reader wanting more.

Instructor Bio:
Melinda lives in the majestic mountains of Arizona. She is a published author of romance, mystery, and paranormal. She also writes articles for Southern Writers Magazine, Native Hoop Magazine, and an editor for Marketing for Romance Writers. When she isn’t creating a suspense story with captivating characters, she can be found reading, writing articles for a magazine, or spending time with her husband Vernon and her kids, Shaelee and Erik.

As a young child, she loved reading and writing. Many nights she would wrap in a blanket, daydream, while creating characters for her own stories. To her own surprise, she started writing and creating my very own world, a place where I could go and lose myself with just a pen and paper.
She grew up with the fascination of the American Indian. Her love for them grew rapidly as she read about them from my history book. She wanted to show, in her writings, of the proud people that the American Indians truly are. They show honor and respect for all living things. If she can capture just a small portion of that in her writings then that would be an added bonus for her.
